MTGS Chorlton March 26 2024

The stars (and the sun)come out at Chorlton

At last we managed to get the twice postponed MTGS fixture at Chorlton played.

It was a superb sunny day and the greens were superb over the 12 holes played and it was noticed with delight that we at last able to see our shadows and the ball actually bounced on the fairways.

The field was reduced considerably from the previous one due to buggies not being allowed and grandfather duties and work seeing others missing out although it was good to see Len Cunningham, Chris Symonds and Roger Arnoll coming down to enjoy the meal and help with après golf work.

We were delighted to see our guest Alex Williams MBE coming down to enjoy the company and present the prizes – although he did get a Thrutcher nomination for heading to Didsbury GC rather than Chorlton before he was put on the correct path.

He survived the nomination which saw Brian Tetlow, a GL Bully win the vote.

There were several Birdie Balls given out and Bill Tunstead won the Booby prize by a point from Brian Tetlow.

It proved to be a close finish led in by Dave Johnston and Mike Field who won signed autobiographies from Alex as well as a round for four at Bramhall posting 34 points.

Next in on 30 were President Roger Jackson and Graham Howarth who won a cpo from Dave Black, Jim Hartley and Frank ‘Floating’ Latham.

There were some great raffle prizes on offer and everyone was delighted to see Matt Whitehead at last officially be appointed as the MTGS Captain.

Before play our Ping Pong stars Brian Kean and John Hilton came down to show off their national Achievement Table Tennis awards as they were unable to play due to work and injury.

A good day on an off the course with Chorlton GC giving great service to brighten up all the suffering we have had during the awful last three months of wet weather which has caused a great deal of golf to be reduced or called off.

Details of our next fixture will be emailed out and displayed on the website once confirmed.

President's Day Didsbury Oct 27th 2023

Wild animals show their class on President’s Day

Despite some awful weather on the preceding days MTGS managed to enjoy President’s Day -as usual managed impeccably by President Roger Jackson – the first winner of the Iball Trophy in 1968.

The weather was fine and warm and a collection of wild animals dominated the day led by King Rat, Mighty Mouse, Birdie Man and Basil Brush.

The top score of the day came from Alan Genter with a great haul of 37 points for 16 holes in the Mouse division ahead of previous champion Dave Black who won a cpo on 35 from Graham Howarth.

In the Rat division Matt Whitehead returned in peak condition from a golf holiday in Turkey to lead in with 35 from Steve Thompson 34 and previous champion Gary Hanley 34.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Roger Jackson and Dave Black and the President’s prize for Services to MTGS was awarded to Alan Genter.

There were plenty of Birdie Balls led by John Desport with a remarkable hat-trick joined by Alan Genter, John Meagher, Steve Thompson and Graham Howarth and John Crawley was a worthy winner of the Booby Prize with 18.

Captain Martin Clarke won the Thrutcher Trophy for the second successive time for again driving from the wrong tee.

The other star of the day was the impeccably behaved Basil Brush who gave a warm and friendly welcome to all players on the fifth hole, moving from his normal haunt of the seventh green to greet them.

Results President’s Day Didsbury

Captain loses his way again, Alan keeps up his winning streak, John is the ‘proud’ first winner of the Booby Trophy, Basil makes a move to greet all

After a lot of poor weather we were able to play 16 holes at Didsbury with a good field losing its Buggie stars due to Buggies being banned.

It was great to welcome back MTGS legends Mark Attwell and Colin McManus as well as some new stars on a very pleasant day superbly supported as always by President Roger Jackson.

Treasurer Alan Genter showed how to handle cash as he won the Mice division and the Musker Trophy as well as the Captain’s Trophy to add to the £800 he won recently in the Didsbury 200 Club.

He posted a best-of-the-day 37 to finish ahead of David Black 35 and Graham Howarth and Peter Whitehead, both 33.

The Rats division was led in by Matt Whitehead 35 to win the Iball Trophy, closely followed by Steve Thompson 34 and Gary Hanley 33.

Wandering Walter Captain Martin Clarke won the Thrutcher Trophy for a second successive time for again teeing from the wrong tee. Nearest the pin prizes went to President Jackson and David Black.

Debutant John Desport was hot with three birdies with Alan Genter, John Meagher, Steve Thompson and Graham Howarth bagging one apiece.

The friendly Didsbury Fox- (Basil) left his home on the eighth tee to give a warm welcome to all of the players by the fifth green.

Scores on the doors (Hopefully ok as some players need to learn how to fill scorecards in!)

Captain’s Day at Flixton GC on September 8

Captain puts on a great day but has a memory lapse

Adam and Steve on fire

 MA is awarded to debutant

As usual Flixton Golf Club provided a course it was a pleasure to play on backed by a lovely clubhouse and very supportive staff. Captain Martin Clarke provided some super prizes and good après golf entertainment.

He was ‘delighted’ to be awarded the Thrutcher Trophy for his memory lapse in playing from the ladies tee on the 10th hole although equally guilty were his playing partners.

It was tight at the top with family duo Steve and Adam Thompson winning a cpo on 41 from John Meagher and Gary Hanley with Stuart Mathieson and Steve Ross 38 and Roger Arnoll and Geoff Garnett 37also in the main prizes.

Geoff was also awarded the new trophy donated by Geoff Carter for services to MTGS and John Meagher won the Geoff Garnett Shield for his contributions to MTGS.

Bottom of the pile were Len Cunningham and Booby Man Mike Owen with 28.

Making their debuts were Captain’s brother Peter. who was immaculate in every way, and Matt Whitehead’s brother Peter who was quickly given the Status of MA for obvious reasons – only the third in MTGS history following Mike Nally and Adam Thompson.

A great day enjoyed by all and our thanks go to Martin

Scores on the doors 41 S and A Thompson, J Meagher and G Hanley, 38 S Ross and S Mathieson,    37 R Arnoll and G Garnett, M Whitehead and P Whitehead, 36 C Symonds, G Singh and F Latham,  35 A Genter and R Jackson, 3 M and P Clarke, 28 L Cunningham and M Owen.

On the day we raised through the raffle £200 which has been donated to The Golf Foundation.

Results- Team Trios at Disley Friday July 21

Beware the injured golfer

Chris drives his team into trouble

Donkeys are in their usual position

 Alan is a putting disaster

The Pongers just made top spot in a close competition at a tricky Disley course.

They got their name as two of them are Table Tennis internationals and their vital third player has the best-smelling after-shave in the area- according to the ladies at his club!

Gary Singh also used his golfing skills and Samaritan experience to great effect in soothing his partners throughout the day.

The just did enough to freeze out the high-flying Bolton Bullfrogs by a point and the Ashers came in third within touching distance of the leaders and if Alan Genter had been able to transfer his financial skills to his putter his team would have walked it.

Completing the main prize winners were the Elite Athletes led by President Roger Jackson.

Next to last were the Didsbury Donkeys who saw off the Didsbury SAS who had constant trouble with the buggy driving of Chris Symonds and failed to finish the course as Chris deservedly took the Thrutcher prize.

There no birdies on the day and no-one made the 109-yard 15th green to win the nearest the pin prize but the 16th saw the immaculate fairway skills of Geoff Garnett take the Nearest the pin in Two prize, just pipping Mike Field.

The competition had been previously twice postponed and due to holidays, injuries, illness and child-minding there was a limited field enjoying the views, the kinky Disley course and some pleasant weather unlike the following day that saw many club competitions called off.

Scores: 68  The Pongers John Hilton, Brian Kean, Gary Singh, 67 Bolton Bull Frogs Dave Johnston, Jack Travis, Mike Field, 66 Ashers Roger Arnoll, Geoff Garnett, Alan Genter, 65 Elite Athletes Steve and Adam Thompson, Roger Jackson, 62 Didsbury Donkeys Brian Tetlow, Len Cunningham, Richard Venes, 47 Didsbury SAS Graham Howarth, Frank Latham, Chris Symonds

Ghost takes Dave to the top

 Len fills in for Frank

Buggy Cock up for three Senior Minds

After some awful weather in the week leading up to the  BB Stableford at Hart Common and some of our more senior members not reading late emails three players arrived at Hart Common only to find out they had a wasted journey, plus one who went to Westhoughton GC!.

But they were able to enjoy one of the best bacon barms we have ever had with egg and sausage also in the barm.

It was a challenging course and cold weather for those out playing and a warm welcome back in their friendly clubhouse.

Making the short journey to the course was Dave Johnston minus his regular partner Jack Travis.

Dave had great company in his Odds and Even Ghosts Mike Field and Rob Hands who took him top of the table with 37 points and they will enjoy sharing his prize.

Next in on 36 were Brian Tetlow and Gary Hanley with Captain Martin Clarke and Matt Whitehead  on 34.

At the other end of the table were Alan Genter (fresh from a victory at Didsbury GC the day before) and Len Counningham who lost out on a cpo on 25 for the basement position to Dave Black and Jim Hartley.

Len picked up the booby prize and also the Tetchy Face for an inappropriate remark on receiving his prize.

Gary Hanley was the Birdie King with three as he carried his grumpy partner Brian into the runners-up spot.

Captain Martin Clarke came up with a special Westhoughton quiz to finish proceedings on a testing day.

Scores- 37 D Johnston and Odds and Evens, 36 G Hanley and B Tetlow, 34 M Clarke and M Whitehead, 33 R Jackson and Odds and Even, M Field and R Hands. A Thompson and R Venes, 32 D Bellis and D Crookes, 28 S Furlong and D Simpkin, 25 D Black and J Hartley A Genter and L Cunningham.

Chorlton put on the style

Old Firm shows its class

Matt has a happy smile

New Captain makes his mark

MTGS have played Chorlton Golf Club many times over the years but the latest competition was probably the best ever with an impressive course in great condition for the time of the years and excellent clubhouse hospitality.

The old firm of Dave Johnston and Jack Travis showed their enduring class with a top score of 43 taking them two clear of Adam and Steve Thompson who did plenty of extra work off the course to help with the day.

Gary Hanley and Dave Simpkin were next in with 40 and Jim Hartley just edged his partner Chris Symonds into the Booby Spot.

Nearest the pin winners were Dave Black and Alan Genter and Dave Johnston (two), Dave Simpkin and Adam Thompson won the birdie balls.

Surprisingly there were no Thrutcher nominations  and to save a few faces we did not award the Tetchy Face and instead awarded a bottle of Pheasant Plucker for the best smile of the day judged by new Captain Martin Clarke.

Martin gave an impressive opening account of MTGS and chose his playing partner and MTGS debutant Matt Whitehead as the Best Smile winner.

Scores on the doors: 43 D Johnston and J Travis, 41 S and A Thompson , 40 G Hanley and D Simpkin. 39 M Field and R Hands, 37 B Tunstead and G Singh, 36 G Garnett and D Black, 35 L Cunningham and A Genter, S Furlong and D Crookes, 34 B Tetlow and R Jackson, 33 J Meagher and J Crawley, 31 M Clarke and M Whitehead, 28 J Hartley and C Symonds.

Iron Man escapes the Booby,

 New Nearest the Pin record

After some dodgy freezing weather prior to the day the historic Houldsworth Golf Club did wonders to give us a course on excellent greens and fantastic clubhouse service with the best ‘one-course’ festive meal MTGS have ever enjoyed.

For the first time in MTGS history no-one won the nearest the pin and nearest the pin in two prizes with the subsequent raffle seeing Frank Latham and Chris Symonds pick up the prizes – good compensation for Chris as his buggy broke down way out on the course..

There were only three birdies from Gary Conroy, Jim Hartley and Rob Hands and Graham Howarth won the Thrutcher Trophy with compliments from his Wandering Walter trolley.

Mike Owen was nudged into the Booby position with cute work from his playing partner Iron Man Bill Tunstead.

The final award of the Tetchy Face was won by John Meagher for his constant carping about how unfair his handicap was compared to Steve Furlong who went on from finishing last at Didsbury to first at Houldsworthas he and Mr Reliable Gary Hanley cruised to victory with 42 points.

Black is the colour at Didsbury,

Gary retains the Iball Trophy

 President takes the Thrutcher

The weather was kind and the course in good condition but there was only one player who shone on the day as home star Dave Black posted a very impressive 42 points to win the Musker Trophy by a massive seven points from Mike Field.

Scoring was even harder in division one for the Iball Trophy and Gary Hanley retained the trophy with a modest 32 taking him three clear of Len Cunningham.

President Roger Jackson took the Thutcher with an out of control trolley and there were no birdies- for the first time in MTGS recent history.

Brian Tetlow took the President’s Trophy for his services to MTGS.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Chris Symonds on 13th hole and joke specialist debutant Steve Thompson was nearest the pin on 18.

Frank Latham made a welcome return to MTGS action and showed how his op was successful as he missed out on the booby prize to Steve Furlong.

Results- Captains Day at Marple

Oldham stars hit the front,

Buggy boys slip to the bottom

It is some years since MTGS were involved in barge hitting at Marple but thanks to member Mike Field we were able to enjoy an excellent course and good hospitality at friendly Marple GC on a sunny day.

Captain Mike Nally made the long trip from York to deliver the prizes and enjoyed playing with a Ghost and Adam Thompson and Brian Kean.

The winners were Oldham Roughyheads duo Martin Clarke and Dave Simpkin with Dave having one of his best-ever rounds of golf as he helped Martin to 42 points, one more than the solid pair of Rob Hands and Jack Travis.

Next in on 38 were the trusty firm of Gary Singh and Bill Tunstead and their prize will be waiting for them at Didsbury.

Nearest the pin winners were Steve Ross and Mike Manley with birdie balls going to Steve Ross and Roger Arnoll.

Adam Thompson took the Thrutcher Trophy after arriving without his golf shoes and having to buy a new pair in the pro shop!

Bottom of the pile were Geoff Garnett and Graham Howarth with Graham picking up the Booby prize.

Scores: 42 M Clarke and D Simpkin, 41 J Travis and R Hands, 38 G Singh and B Tunstead, S Ross and S Mathieson, 37 M Field and R Arnoll, 36 R Venes and J Hartley, B Kean and A Thompson, 33 R Jackson and M Owen, John Meagher and John Crawley, B Tetlow and A Genter, C Symonds and M Manley, 32 M Nally and Ghost, 30 G Garnett and G Howarth.

MTGS Westhoughton July 21st 2022

A new and very different venue for MTGS at a challenging course and friendly welcome at West Houghton GC was enjoyed by all.

MTGS BB Pairs at Westhoughton GC

Cream rises to the top,

Sour cream sinks to the bottom

Dave the Eagle flies high,

 Dave carries two limp Ghosts

It was the first time for the bulk of players that we had played Westhoughton GC and it was a pleasant surprise with an excellent and challenging course, fine weather conditions and a friendly clubhouse and service.

The common phrase in golf is that ‘form is temporary and class is permanent’ and this was certainly the case as the top pair of Geoff Garnett and Richard Venes romped to a comfortable win with 41 points, wrapped up by a ferret par on the 18th.

It was a close battle for the runners-up berth with a cpo on 39 going in favour of a bitter Len Cunningham and Alan Genter from Steve Furlong and Mike Nally and the perpetually unlucky John Meagher and Gary Hanley who just missed out on a prize.

One of the highlights on the day was an eagle three on the par five ‘Three Pits’ Sixth hole and only birdies came from Ivor Tomlinson and Mike Owen.

Nearest the pin winners were as usual Gary Singh and Alan Genter.

The Booby Prize was won by Brian Tetlow to the great delight of all who finished in last place with Bill Tunstead, his smiling partner, scoring more than him in a dismal haul of 28.

The winner of the Thrutcher was Geoff Garnett, proposed by Brian Tetlow, for a minor technological mishap.

Scores 41 G Garnett and R Venes, 39 L Cunningham and A Genter, S Furlong and M Nally, J Meagher and G Hanley, 38 I Tomlinson and J Kirk, D Bellis and D Simpkin, 37 D Johnson and J Travis, 36 Dave Black and Ghosts, 35 R Jackson and M Owen, 34 J Hartley and M Manley, 32 G Singh and R Arnoll, 29 G Howarth and C Symonds, 28 B Tetlow and B Tunstead

Our next fixture will be President’s Day in late October at a venue to be decided soon.

If you have a friend who you think might be interested in joining MTGS let me know and I will look to include him.

Captain’s Stars show their class,

 Donkeys have their best-ever finish,

Jim takes over from Frank

 Alan is a double Thrutcher

Fairfield Golf Club again put on the style for MTGS providing a challenging and pristine course backed by a modern clubhouse, friendly staff and probably the best meat pie we have ever enjoyed.

The weather was not too kind on the day but we got through without too many problems.

Captain Mike Nally showed his weatherproof quality as he led his Stars team of Roger Arnoll and home club player Gary Hanley to a victory which put them in a league of their own with 78 points, nine more than the Didsbury Donkeys who had their best-ever Team Trios result.

They just pipped the unlucky Didsbury Elite Trio who picked up the last of the team prizes.

Debutant Chris Symonds won the Nearest the pin on the tenth hole and there were birdie balls for Roger Arnoll (two), Mike Owen, Jim Hartley and Dave Simpkin.

Alan Genter won the Thrutcher Trophy for the second successive competition for some crazy play on the course and Jim Hartley picked up the Booby Prize after his Didsbury SAS team finished in last place and he had the fewest points in the team.

The Oldham Roughyheads had to finish early due to a domestic problem for their Captain John Meagher as they looked sure to be in the top three.

Ashton pair ping to victory,

Welcome back to Steve

  Dave scoops up the wine

We finally got the new Captain Mike Nally into action after two postponements due to bad weather at Didsbury which survived plenty of flood problems earlier in the year and presented a course in good condition and a close contest in howling winds and horrible showers. (See photos 2022)

Top of the shop with 37 were  UK table tennis stars Brian Kean and Adam Thompson just one ahead of the powerful team of Roger Arnoll and Garry Singh with Brian Tetlow and Richard Venes next in with 35.

Possible for the first time in MTGS history there were no birdies and Nearest the Pin prizes had only one winner in Dave Johnston who won both for his Nearest the Pin in two on the 13th

On a very windy and wet day Mike Owen took the Thrutcher Trophy for seeing his umbrella blown into the Mersey and he had to be held back from pursuing it back to Ashton-on-Mersey.

He just one the vote ahead of Alan Genter who showed his gymnastic skills in falling down the river bank.

It was great to welcome back Steve Furlong into MTGS action after his long illness and he played a substantial part in supporting his colleague Derek Crookes into last spot with 27.

Scores: 37 B Kean and A Thompson, 36 R Arnoll and G Singh, 35 B Tetlow and R Venes, 34 G Howarth and C Symonds, 33 J Hartley and Odds and Evens, 32 r Jackson and M Owen , 31 M Nally and G Garnett, D Johnston and J Travis, M Clarke and J Meagher, 30 L Cunningham and A Genter, 27 S Furlong and D Crookes.

Results Presidents Day Vale Royal Abbey Oct 28th 2021

VRA was a fabulous day with deserving winners.

Frank is gutted!

The Eagle crashes to earth

Good return to action for Martin

Thanks to the splendid efforts of treasurer Alan Genter MTGS enjoyed a memorable day at the historic venue of Vale Royal Abbey and its excellent course at a reduced rate.

Even Gazza Smiff was able to get there on time as the battle for the Iball and Musker Trophies commenced with President Roger Jackson there to welcome all to the first tee and take their pictures for Crime Watch -now viewable on the website and Liverpool Police file.

Roger was the first winner of the Iball Trophy in 1968 at North Wales GC and he was again in the group of leading players in the Musker Division.

But as always in golf form is temporary and class is permanent as the cream rose to the top in both divisions with Gary Hanley, now a frequent winner at Fairfield GC, leading in division one with 36 points and certain very modest Geoff Garnett topped division two with 34.

Birdies were in very short supply and Nearest the pin prizes went to two lesser known players.

John Meagher bowed out with great dignity after serving two difficult years as MTGS Captain and handed over the reins to Mike Nally MA who also won the Thutcher and the Golf Foundation raffle watch- we were delighted to be able to donate £320 to The Golf Foundation for the Captain’s efforts in 2021.

As a former maths teacher Mike will now have to learn how to tell the time!

Frank Latham had a face like a drowned rat with two black eyes after being denied of the Booby Prize by Mike Owen.

Good to see Martin Clarke back in good action after his recent limb replacement.

But a great day on a wonderful course with fine weather apart from the last few minutes.

Scores – Iball division – 36 G Hanley 34 M Field, R Arnoll, 33 M Clarke, 30 T Handford, 29 Gazza Smiff, D Simpkin, 28 R Hands, 27 D Johnston, 24 I Tomlinson, 23 P Forshaw, L Cunningham, A Thompson, 21 G Howarth.

Well done Mr Captain on a great day at the scenic Saddleworth Golf Club with fantastic views, playing at 1,000 feet high on a challenging course

with great clubhouse support in near tropical temperatures.

Leading the way on the day was golden boy Ivor Tomlinson, ( he has just got his name up on the Didsbury honour boards by winning the BBall KO,

aided by local knowledge from the President.

The winning shot came on the 285-yard fourth hole where Ivor holed his approach shot for a very rare MTGS eagle.

Dave Johnston found a good stand-in for Jack Travis (who like Frank Latham has suffered a painful fall) in Rob Hands as they were just a point

 behind the winners.

Brian Tetlow at last got in the prizes with great help from his partner Roger Arnoll while Mike Owen and Gary Singh suffered from vertigo

and heat stroke which drove them into last place.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Ivor Tomlinson and Len Cunningham. Also congrats to Alan Genter for winning the Thrutcher Trophy.

We raised £220 for the Golf Foundation and all who contributed will be in another raffle for a watch and a round of golf for four drawn on October 3.

Nearest the pin D Johnston, Nearest the pin in two R Hands. Birdie balls G Howarth, R Arnoll, G Singh.

Fairfield Golf Club has undergone significant changes on and off the course in recent years and they have made the course an excellent challenge with some terrific greens and tricky hole lay-outs backed by an excellent new clubhouse. Still trying to forget about the reservoir tee shot on the 17th hole!!

The cream rose to the top in both divisions which were tightly contested – but if you are not called Dave you could not win!

The field dropped a lot on the days before the competition due to pinging, grandchildren and injuries and on the day Dave Crookes retired in mid play due to a strain and we hope he recovers quickly along with the other injured golfers.

At the other end of the table Frank Latham hit top form to win the Booby Prizes and the Tetchy Face for his usual sarcasm to top officials.

The Thrutcher Trophy was back in action and had a deserving winner in Brian Tetlow for his Van De Velde impressions on the stream on the 18th hole.

A very good day on and off the course and we can now look forward to Saddleworth and Vale Royal Abbey.

The long-awaited return of Chris O’Neill from his new Welsh abode inspired Ivor Tomlinson and home star Alan Dowdall to a comfortable win with 86 points.

They finished four clear of the smooth and classy MTGS Elite team of President Roger Jackson, treasurer Alan Genter and secretary Geoff Garnett with the Oldham Owlers Dave Simpkin and Derek Crookes plus a useful percentage winning a cpo on 81 points from the very competitive local stars of Sale Shanks Brian Kean, Graham Howarth and Adam Thompson.

The shot of the day came on the par three fourth hole from Dave Bellis to win the nearest the pin prize with varied reports on how the ball ended up just behind the hole as Dave ignored the derisive comments to coolly slot in the putt for five points.

At the other end of the table were the usual team of the Didsbury Donkeys, Frank Latham, Len Cunningham and Brian Tetlow, a massive nine shots adrift of the field.

Frank returned to his usual form after recent hot play by winning the Booby prize with 17 points just three less than Brian.

There was another great shot on the 18th as Robert Hands just missed a superb eagle but cruised to the Nearest the Pin in Two prize and holed the putt for a birdie.

The only other birdie on the day came from Adam Thompson using his local knowledge on the tricky 16th to good effect.

An excellent day all round with a welcome return to golf.

After waiting six months for the replay of President’s Day a good field  finally enjoyed a great day at Didsbury GC in excellent weather and good service outside the clubhouse.

The top scorer of the day and the first-time winner of the Musker Trophy was our Scouse ‘friend’ Brian Tetlow who rose to 37 points with a fantastic burst of scoring 14 points in four holes, three more than treasurer Alan Genter.

Local knowledge also paid off in the Pep division for the Iball Trophy as Didsbury star Steve Ross topped the division with 35 points ahead of another Didsbury legend Roger Arnoll who was the only one to notch a birdie.

Steve Ross was the only name on the nearest the pin holes on the 18th to mop up both prizes.

 Denton Captain’s Charity Day  2/9/20

Great Fund Raising for the Golf Foundation

 Dynamic duo unstoppable

Heavy Metal goes rusty

   MA’s show their potential

It was a slightly chaotic day with Denton making late changes to our planned day and some very wet weather out on the course but as always class is permanent and the top pair Dave Johnston and Robert Hands were in a league of their own posting a formidable 44 points to win by eight points from the MA stars Mike Nally and Garry Singh.

With Frank Latham sailing in Greece the Booby Prize was up for grabs and our music fanatic Will-i.an ‘Heavy Metal’ Tungsten took over the mantle as his ball took shelter in the trees from the rain on too many holes as well as dips in the many streams at the challenging Denton course.

Debutants Adam Thompson and Dr Murray Murugan made their mark and enjoyed the day.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Dave Bellis and Martin Clarke and Robert Hands had the only birdie of the day.

Congratulations also to Dave Bellis on winning the Geoff Garnett Shield for his support and service to MTGS for many years.

Captain John Meagher was delighted with the response to the Captain’s Charity raffle which will play a big part in the cheque of £250 going to the Golf Foundation and all raffle entrants will also go in the raffle for a top watch, a round for four at Prestbury and a round for four at Reddish Vale -last year Brian Tetlow won the watch. The draw will be done on October 2 on the WGTB Days Out at Heaton Moor.

Scores: 44 D Johnston and R Hand, 36 G Singh and M Nally, 35 D Simpkin and S Furlong, M Clarke and D Bellis, 34 P Forshaw and B Foster, 33 J Meagher and G Hanley, 32 G Carter and M Murugan, 31 B Tetlow and G Howarth, R Jackson and A Thompson, 30 A Genter and R Venes, 28 G Garnett and W Tunstead.

Flixton Team of Three Stableford  July31st 2020

Frank scoops up the prizes

 Gazza finds some super stars

Donkeys keep up their reputation

MA lose the plot and the comp

On possibly the hottest day of the year Flixton Golf Club provided a very challenging and well-presented course with extremely slick greens as a good field of over 30 players enjoyed a very friendly atmosphere throughout an excellent day.

There were some very strong teams in the field and the MA team looked set for success as they played the final hole- unfortunately the heat must have got to their brains as they played to the ninth green again instead of the 18th to lose six points and top spot.

Sneaking up to victory were Gazza Smiff’s team of international table tennis star John Hilton and Jerry Harris with 82 points, picking up 45 on the back nine.

Next in were Odds and Sods with Geoff Carter, Richard Venes and Philip Forshaw posting 79 points, two more than the MA’s.

Down at the other end of the table were the Didsbury Donkeys and An Ass who went clickety click, two behind the Super Athletes.

Nearest the pin prizes went to debutant David Raines and the returning Ivor Tomlinson with hard-earned birdie balls going to Roger Arnoll, Gazza, Jerry Harris and John Hilton (two).

The Booby prize went to the Didsbury Ass Frank Latham and although there were several excellent nominations for the Thrutcher Trophy Frank took that as well by playing the ninth instead of the 18th –which his partners were playing!!

Luckily the President and Secretary survived a very near miss while waiting to play the 4th(see Pic)

Scores: Gazza’s Glamour Boys G Smith, J Hilton, J Harris 82, Odds and Sods G Carter, R Venes, P Forshaw 79, MA  M Nally  M Field, G Singh 77, Ramsbottom Raiders D Johnston, J Travis, R Hands 75, Starling Flyers J Meagher, M Clarke, G Hanley 73, MTGS Elite R Jackson, R Arnoll, G Garnett 73, Didsbury Hitmen D Simpkin, S Furlong, D Crookes 72, ZOOM D Raines, K Brace, D Prinki 69, Super Athletes – L Hofton, J Dwan, I Tomlinson 68, Didsbury Donkeys and an Ass B Tetlow, L Cunningham, A Genter, F Latham 66.

 –High Legh Park Jan 3/20

Old firm strike again in close contest

Assassin Frank gets his just reward

New  Society records set for birdies and nearest the pin

After the awful weather we had endured for several weeks High Legh Park was an excellent venue with greens in great condition and buggies allowed on the course.

The excellent field responded with some tidy golf and a tight contest led in by the ever-reliable Dave ‘Red Hot’ Johnston and his able ally Jack Travis with 39 points.

But it was only just enough to shake off a determined 38 points from super athlete Martin Clarke and Gary Hanley with a ruck of players on 37 points topped and Rogered by Messrs Arnoll and Jackson with a booming back nine holes.

It was a bitter battle at the other end of the field with Didsbury dreadnoughts Brian Tetlow and Frank Latham battling it out for the Booby prize comfortably won by Frank.

Frank was so disturbed with his defeat that he tried to kill off the secretary with a deliberate wild long shot, well witnessed and reported by the reliable Mike Manley to take the Tetchy Face.

For the first time in 83 years of MTGS golf there were no birdies and only one nearest the pin prize won by Martin Clarke on the tricky ninth.

Richard Venes came near to claiming the Thrutcher after putting his name on the nearest the pin on the par three 16th thinking that it was nearest the pin in two.

Scores – 39 D Johnston and J Travis, 38 M Clarke and G Hanley, 37 R Arnoll and R Jackson, M Collings and S Jones, J Meagher and D Bellis, M Field and R Hands, 36 D Crookes and D Simpkin, 34 G Garnett and M Manley, 32 G Singh and L Cunningham, 31 R Venes and P Forshaw, B Mannia and S Furlong, G Smith and Odds and Evens, 29 M Nally and G Howarth, 26 B Tetlow and F Latham

We were lucky with it being a dry day but with a cold wind the course was still a good test of golf at a fine venue.

President’s Day at Didsbury GC on Thursday October 24

Class is permanent form is temporary as MTGS cream rises to the top

Mike has a quick lesson in protocol

  Roy on a learning curve

President Roger Jackson was blessed with an excellent day of sunny weather and a course standing up well to recent monsoon weather seeing some good scoring as the season’s ‘major’ trophies were on the line.

The Iball Trophy for the top player in division one was won by big-hitting cricket legend Roger Arnoll who drew great support from his excellent playing partners.

He posted 37 points to finish ahead of the ever-consistent Dave Johnston 36 and the ever unlucky Dave Smith 35.

The Musker Trophy for the top player in division one had Geoff Garnett on top with 35 points from Ray Howell 33 and Mike Nally 31.

The Barry Rees Memorial Trophy, for the three round accumulator, was won in style by Dave Johnston with 102 points leaving him well clear of Jack Travis and the Jim Harris Trophy for Non Winners over the season was claimed with ecstasy by the President.

Nearest the pin prizes were taken by Gary Hanley and Dave Johnston and Roy Lindon won the Booby Prize with 19 points. The Thrutcher Trophy was not taken but if Iron Man Bill Tunstead had been there he would have been a prime candidate.

The President's Special Award this year went to Len Cunningham for his long standing support to the Society and his willingness to step into the breech when required. This has, on occasions, included standing in for the President and Treasurer.

The final award went to Mike Nally who must remember that status must be respected in golf circles and he took the Tetchy Face for his careless remark to the secretary.

A good day and our thanks to the President, the first-ever winner of the Iball Trophy in 1968 at North Wales GC, for his superb prizes and much appreciated hospitality.

Scores Iball division 37 R Arnoll, 36 D Johnston, 35 D Smith, 33 J Travis, 32 G Hanley, 31 B Gaskarth, 25 M Field

 Bill shows his all-round fitness

There was a fine turn out at Marple Golf Club for Captain’s Day with Captain Bob delighted to receive £320 towards the Golf Foundation Charity and hopefully one of MTGS will win a £200 Etiqus watch as part of the free raffle for the donated tenners.

The weather was kind, the course was excellent and as always Marple were great hosts off the course to make this a special MTGS day.

Captain Bob acted as a floating navigator to steer Mike MA Nally and Philip ‘Pig’ Forshaw into top spot with 40 points one more than Steve Austin and Ron Jolly and the ever consistent Roger Arnoll and Len Cunningham 38.

At the other end of the scoring Frank Latham was deeply disappointed to lose out on the booby prize to his playing partner Alan Genter who posted just 13 points.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Brian Tetlow and Dave Johnston and Brian also won the Thutcher Prize for his 20-year-old glove kindly replaced by his playing partner Bill Tunstead.

Bill just missed out on the Thrutcher by forgetting his buggy battery but showed great resolve in pushing  his buggy over the full course.

A lovely day enjoyed by all!

Didsbury stars in the prizes

THREE Didsbury stars got their rewards for their efforts on the course and their generosity off it in a busy week.

‘Electric’ Ewan McCray was announced as the Golfer of the Year for winning the Ecletic top spot for his consistent form throughout the summer with the former star cricketer having the best aggregate for his top six finishes.

Bill ‘Heavy Metal’ Tunstead is looking forward to seeing his name in gold letters on another club honours board after winning the coveted Bill Dale Trophy with a neat haul of 40 points..

Finally Brian Tetlow has not done much on the golf course but a generous donation to the Golf Foundation in a raffle organised by WGTB Golf and Manchester Teacher’s Golf Society, which raised over £600 for the charity saw Brian win the top prize

Brian’s politest title at the club is ‘Lucky Liverpudlian’ and he can live up to that after winning a £200 Etiqus Timepiece which he was presented with by Seniors stalwart Alan Genter.

Bill Tunstead points out where his name will be going on the Bill Dale honours board.

Great Day, Great course

Lefties rule the day

Frank is frustrated

It’s a game of Snap for the secretary

Ashton-under-Lyne Golf Club provided a truly superbly conditioned and challenging course and backed by great weather and a full English breakfast after play made this a great day to remember.

It was a day for the lefties with Roger Arnoll posting his second successive MTGS victory to top the Ireland division with 34 points, closely followed by local cricket legend Martin Clarke.

In the England division another left-had artist Mike 29MA Nally followed up a competition victory at Didsbury Golf Club with a fantastic haul of 39 points (one more than Ireland’s cricket team) to win the England division at a canter, eight points clear of Len Cunningham who edged out Garry Singh on a cpo.

There was a bitter battle for the Booby prize with Frank Latham very annoyed that his 13-pointer was one more than Mike Owen.

Frank did have the pleasure of winning the Thrutcher Trophy after his Chauffeur had left his precious bag of clothes on his large Cheshire driveway.

Tragedy also for secretary Geoff Garnett who arrived on the first tee to find his trusty driver snapped in half – a later inspection of the car park on CCTV saw a shadowy figure looking like an Oldham Roughyhead from Delph (Allegedly on holiday) wearing a Tetchy Face, lurking in the area around the secretary’s car – but no substantial evidence!

Nearest the pin prizes went to Dave Johnston on the tricky seventh and to Stuart Mathieson with a great shot on the difficult 18th ending just ten feet from the pin.

Scores- Ireland- 34 R Arnoll, 33 M Clarke, 32 D Johnston and J Travis, 31 Gazza Smiff, 30 M Field, 23 G Hanley and B Mannia.

England- 39 M Nally, 31 L Cunningham, G Singh, 30 Geoff Smith, A Genter, 28 R Venes, 27 R Jackson, 26 G Garnett, 24 S Mathieson, 13 F Latham, 12 M Owen.

Latest scores in the Accumulator – 66 D Johnston, 63 J Travis, 62 L Cunningham, 61 M Nally, 60 M Clarke, 59 R Arnoll

Non Winners – 22 G Garnett, 20 L Cunningham, R Jackson 15

Great new course for MTGS

Frank has not stopped smiling

Brian gets the Klopps

Odds and Sods to be renamed

Harwood Golf Club, thanks to Dave Johnston provided an interesting, well conditioned and entertaining course for its first visit by MTGS for the annual Team Trios competition.

This is traditionally the lowest attendance of our competitions but it was a well prepared set of teams who battled for top spot.

It went to the wire of a single point with Odds and Sods comprising Roger Arnoll, Richard Venes and Frank Latham (dropped by the Didsbury Donkeys) posting 76 Points to win from the MTGS Elite of President Roger Jackson, secretary Geoff Garnett and host Dave Johnston.

Oldham Roughyheads Captain John Meagher took the Tetchy Face for an irresponsible remark on the course to the Elite group and his wife was so impressed by the improvement in his looks that she would like him to wear it all the time.

The Didsbury Donkeys again took last spot with a meagre 60 points and Liverpool supporter Brian Tetlow romped to the Booby prize with a total of 12 points after suffering a severe dose of the ‘Klopps’ to win a bag of Nobbys Nuts.

Frank Latham was celebrating long and hard after being a crucial cog in the winning trio and being dropped by the Donkeys and next year his team will be called the Didsbury Stallions!

There is still a search party out looking for ex-Captain and Bionic Man Gazza Smiff!

The highs of the day were the steep slopes and wonderful views of seven counties at Macclesfield Golf Club and most of the lows came on the course as MTGS members suffered from altitude sickness and lack of fitness.

Mike Owen went in more bunkers and other hazards than the points he accumulated closely followed by President Jackson and a close fight for the Booby prize was won by Captain Bob Mannia, well behind superfit Frank Latham.

Dave Johnston again showed his class to take the top prize in the Pep Division and lead in the Accumulator Race for the Barry Rees Memorial Trophy and Len Cunningham was the top Klopp man.

Garry Singh made a welcome return to MTGS action after his latest injury and picked up the Thrutcher Trophy after guiding his playing colleagues to the wrong green on the first hole.

There was a rare Tetchy Face for the perfectly mannered Alan Genter for his attempt to assassinate the Captain and secretary near the third green

Gary Hanley had a quiet MTGS debut but showed his talent with a birdie on the 11th hole.

Prize winners were given their awards by Macc Captain Rod Price with 29MA Mike Nally taking the mystery prize donated by Macc and the winners were given a viewing of the club’s Jamie Donaldson room.

The day certainly did wonders for several Didsbury members who performed well in the club competition on the following day led by Roger Arnoll who won division one with 40 points

Mike wanders to a well deserved Thrutcher Trophy

Dave’s smile gives him a special debut award

The first fixture of 2019 and the Captain’s debut for Bob Mannia saw fantastic weather backed by a well conditioned course producing a string of top scores as several players made impressive MTGS debuts. Louaz Hofton, on his return to golf with MTGS has been working hard on his game with Didsbury pro Peter Barber and he partnered top Cheshire and Bramall Park senior star Ken Thomson to a great haul of 48 points but it was only one clear of Ron Jolley and Steve Austin with the main prizes being completed by Roger Arnoll and Geoff Garnett with 45.

Ken Thomson also won both nearest the pin prizes to show his county class

The winning pair were subject to intense scrutiny and it was unanimous that Louaz should become the second member of the MA club (26MA) along with Mike Nally 29MA.

At the other end of the field Mike Owen was the booby man with just four scores on the card as he partnered long suffering Captain Bob to 30 points.

Mike Nally was one of the stars of the day as he walked with his clubs to Withington Golf Club, caused a panic in the pro shop as they thought that they had forgotten a society booking, before realising that Withington GC was not Chorlton despite having told plenty of people the day before at Didsbury that he would see them at Chorlton.

A quick taxi trip (cost £10) got him to Chorlton to relieve the concerns of his debut playing partner Richard Venes.

Mike was the first-ever member of MTGS to nominate himself for the Thrutcher Trophy with no vote required. Debutant Dave Smith took the Tetchy Face for his constant smiling and opening remark to club officials.

There was also a very special award of the Geoff Garnett Shield for services to MTGS and the deserving recipient was the long serving and long suffering Brian Tetlow who has won a record total of Thrutcher Trophies and Tetchy Faces during his many years in MTGS.

There were too many birdie balls to include in the newsletter.

Scores: 48 L Hofton and K Thomson, 47 R Jolley and S Austin, 45 R Arnoll and G Garnett, 43 D Johnston and J Travis, M Clarke and D Bellis, J Thompson and R Jackson, 41 M Manley and L Cunningham, 40 D Smith and R Lindon, 39 D McGovern and B Tetlow, S Mathieson and S Ross, 38 B Gaskarth and R Howell, 34 M Nally and R Venes, 33 J Meagher and F Latham, 30 B Mannia and M Owen.

Ups and downs for Bob

PIGS snort their way to another win

Lee makes a welcome return and gets his just reward,

 Gazza on the recovery trail

Didsbury Golf Club provided a course in great condition on the full 18 greens which were fantastic for late December and this was backed by a string of good scores and a very tight finish.

We were also blessed by good weather with plenty of sumptuous food to follow the golf and make this a great start to the latest (82nd) season of MTGS golf.

A cpo on 44 points saw our serial winners Dave Johnston and Jack Travis take the top prizes by the skin of their teeth from Lee Corns and Mike ‘Eagle’ Field.

Just a point off the pace were home stars Roger Arnoll and Len Cunningham who won a cpo from Oldham Roughyheads Steve Furlong and Dave Simpkin.

Another point back were Alan Genter and Ian Bailey who again won a cpo on 42 points from President Roger Jackson and Ewan McCray.

At the other end of the results were Frank Latham and Bob Mannia with 31 points and Frank was delighted to hand over the Booby prize to Bob who had made the least contribution to their card.

But it was also a proud day for Bob as he was anointed as the 2019 Captain by retiree Gazza Smiff who presented him with his trophy and badge.

Our thanks go to Gazza, who turned up but was unable to play due to his latest operation on his foot – only two parts of his body now need replacing!Gazza has been a fine Captain during 2018, both on the course where he has shown a great range of skills, some wonderful tales and jokes  apres golf and introducing plenty of top golfers to MTGS during his year of office.

Alan Genter took the Thrutcher Trophy for a dangerous trolley incident and Lee Murphy’s sly mouth saw him win the Tetchy Face!

Birdies came from Roger Arnoll and Lee Corns with Mike Field having a remarkable Eagle three on the 534-yard 12th hole – he’s not on the Cheshire GU Executive without good reason!

Nearest the pin prizes went to Rob Johnson and Ewan McCray to complete an excellent society day.

Didsbury’s total class gets its just reward

   Mike’s trolley does a runner

With Didsbury GC undergoing its greens redevelopment it proved to be a great move to switch the President’s Day to the old MTGS stomping ground of Flixton GC.

Dave Bellis was freed from the Crown Court to allow him to attend at the last minute.

An excellent course, terrific clubhouse, lovely weather and great service on and off the course made this a memorable day for MTGS and President Roger Jackson and a good back up team ensured that the secretary could attend the funeral of his sister knowing that everything would run smoothly.

Two people were in danger of Thrutcher nomination before play but the mysterious loss of Mike Owen’s trolley, which was eventually found lodged in a bush, took over the trophy.

There was some good scoring in both divisions (Trump and Johnson) with the sheer class of Roger Arnoll, seeing him take the Iball Trophy with a great haul of 40 points taking him home from Flixton’s Ron Jolly 38 and the consistent Barrow Gaskarth 37.

Didsbury members dominated the second division with Bill Tunstead (keeping an eye on him!) taking the Musker Trophy with 37 points ahead of Len Cunningham and 29MA Mike Nally 33.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Ron Jolly and Martin Clarke and predictably Frank Latham won the Booby Prize with Geoff Smith taking the President’s Trophy and the Tetchy Face stayed in its bag as all players were impeccably behaved at all times.

Scores- 40 R Arnoll, 38 R Jolly, 37 B Gaskarth, B Tunstead, 36 L Cunningham, 33 29MA M Nally, J Thompson, 32 D Robinson, S Furlong, J Meagher, 31,Gazza Smiff,  D Johnston R Bunting, 30 J Travis, 29 J Loughman, 28 D Bellis, 27 B Tetlow, 26 A Genter, Geoff Smith, 24 R Jackson  M Clarke 23, R Hands 18, F Latham 14

Saddleworth Sept4th

Fantastic views, an excellent and varied course and superb off course welcome and food made this a memorable day for the attendees.

Jack Travis and Dave Johnston form a formidable pair and in a close finish they needed inspiration from the their playing partner Mike 29MA Nally to lift them over the line by a point with a 44-point haul.

Hot on their heels was local boy John Meagher, who defied the odds of the Odds and Even Partner system after his own partner had cried off with a football injury just before the event.

He pinched points from his playing partners Mike Field and Geoff Garnett and became the first-ever single prize winner in a MTGS pairs Stableford pipping them by a point.

Jack Travis won the nearest the pin on the spectacular 15th and no-one made the green with their second shot on the 17th to claim the nearest the pin in two.

Frank Latham was again in the prizes taking the Booby Prize but if Alan Genter had been in the last pair he would have overtaken Frank!

The Thrutcher (in a close vote) went to Geoff Garnett for accidentally taking a sip from a Scouse pint!

Scores: 44 D Johnston and J Travis, 43 J Meagher and Odds and Even, 42 G Garnett and M Field, Gazza Smiff and G Singh, 38 L Cunningham and R Arnoll, M Nally and A Genter, 36 R Jackson and B Tunstead, 32 B Tetlow and F Latham.

Great fund-raising effort for The Golf Foundation,

New boy goes home loaded

Old boy shows his class Frank is unlucky,

 Stuart wins first MTGS trophy

New Mills provided fantastic views and a great variety of challenging holes although they have great problems with the horrid winter weather giving them massive problems with their greens.

Their friendly clubhouse and staff were excellent and we look forward to a future visit to this lovely club.

It was a case of old and new boys triumphing on the day with Mark Attwell making a superb return to MTGS action with a record haul of five birdies taking him to the top of the Rochdale division with 41 points, two more than injury -ravaged Captain Gazza Smiff.

Recently retired Bill Tunstead made a stunning MTGS debut topping the Oldham division with 37 points, one more than Geoff Garnett.

Bill also picked up several other prizes on the day to make his car boot look like it was on a Channel Booze Run.

Frank Latham gave unstinting support checking result etc but was unlucky to be reported by the Captain for derogatory comments to take the Tetchy Face after a close vote with Gary Conroy.

Stuart Mathieson was ‘delighted’ to win his first MTGS Trophy taking the Thrutcher Trophy for his dramatic display on the tenth tee.

Captain’s Day supported The Golf Foundation and raised £270 towards the charity thanks to the generous efforts by MTGS members who all received 10 free entries into a raffle for a £180 Etiqus watch.

It was also the second leg of the Accumulator for the Barry Rees Memorial Trophy and Gazza leapt into the lead with 78 points from Lee Corns 74, Dave Johnston and Geoff Garnett both 66

More raffle tickets can be obtained at the Saddleworth meeting for those who missed out at New Mills – which will again swell the charity donation

The revamped Styal golf course was enjoyed by all on a superb day of sunny weather with a string of good scores in the Trios format.

Top of the shop with 94 points were Dave Johnston, Jack Travis and late sub Philip Forshaw providing an excellent replacement for Mike Field.

They finished a point clear of the Mersey Magicians team of Jim Reynolds, Roger Arnoll and Brian Kean and just out of the prizes were the Elite team of Gazza Smiff, Roger Jackson and Geoff Garnett.

The Didsbury Donkeys avoided another disaster but the great effort of Alan Genter in trying to eliminate Scouse Leg End Brian Tetlow with his runaway buggy earned him the Thrutcher Trophy and a nomination for a George medal for services to his country.

It was good to see the return of Geoff Smith and Frank Latham in the Odds and Sods team as they finished 15 points adrift of the rest of the team with Frank ’The Shank’ Latham roaring to the Booby prize.

Congratulations to Captain Gazza for playing with a damaged bicep muscle that left him playing one-handed but still with tremendous power and accuracy to make a valuable contribution to his team.

Congratulations also to the Elite Mole for grassing up Mike Manley for the Tetchy Face

After the trials of an awful winter Ashton-on-Mersey was a true delight as it provided superb greens and a tricky course in great condition and excellent weather for the first competition for the Accumulator for the Barry Rees Trophy. Our super stars Captain Gazza Smiff and Lee Corns led the way in the Wigan division with Lee winning a cpo on 39 points to take top spot, 16 points clear of retiring Captain Lee Murphy.

The Man City division was won by the consistent Len Cunningham with 35 points from the well travelled Gary Singh 33 and debutant Stuart Mathieson 31.

Bob Mannia’s imitation of Sergio Garcia at The Masters saw him take the booby prize with 16 points.

Mike Field seems to attract trolley troubles on the course and after his rescue act at Withington he had a long chase after his roaming trolley to take the Thrutcher Trophy.

Another debutant was the AoM Captain Jim Reynolds, recently retired from teaching in Salford, who will become a regular for MTGS and ensured that we got a warm welcome from his club.
