2015

Geoff Garnett celebrates his 50th year as member of the Society with his second spell as Captain.

When I joined the society in the late 60's Geoff was the guiding light and Sec of the society, we did not have a captain in those days. He is still the Secretary. It is his undying enthusiasm and youthfulness which have kept the society going during the last 50 years and amazingly he still has a good head of hair . Thank you Geoff

A Birdie at Last

Dave’s up for the challenge at Harwood

DAVE Johnston, (pictured) the new Captain of the homely Harwood Golf Club, near Bolton, is ready for an enjoyable and hectic 12 months ahead. The 13-handicapper has been a member of his club for 26 years and now retired he was a commercial manager and company secretary for Simon Carves Ltd. Dave, who plays two or three times a week, has his favourite hole at Harwood. He said: “It is the testing par three fourth which has spectacular views of Winter Hill with water hazards to the left and right of the green. “Apart from my own club my other favourite course is Wilmslow.” Dave, a staunch Man City fan, has his chosen charity for the year as Bury Hospice and his own personal golfing highlight was to win the BNP Paribas Gold day at Wentworth West course. His final golfing dream is to make up a four ball with Luke Donald for his short-game skills, Ernie Els for making it so easy and Colin Montgomerie for his Ryder Cup history.

Action man in charge at Grange

GRANGE over Sands Golf Club has a true ‘action man’ in charge for the coming year as Barrow Gaskarth (pictured) has taken over as Captain. After a long and enjoyable teaching career in three Manchester schools Barrow returned to his native south Lakes area to enjoy his retirement and quickly came to very involved with his beloved club. The 13-handicapper plays two or three times at his own club each week as well as with two golf societies and his other main hobby is cycling to keep up his high fitness levels. He has cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats on the scenic cycleways as well as the Cheshire and Cumbria cycleways and his winter hobby is singing with the Cartmel Choral Society. Barrow said: “My other favourite course is Silloth on Solway, a superb links course I play on each year, and I also have a soft spot for Heaton Moor where I began my golf. “I would urge anyone from the North West who has not yet played Grange to come up and give it a go and I am sure that they will not be disappointed. “The charity I am supporting is St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston where my mother was given magnificent care in very pleasant surroundings ten years ago. “My chosen four-ball would include Paul Casey because he enjoys his golf and is always smiling and like me he is not quite the finished article. “The there would be our club pro Nick Lowe who is a great teacher and well like and respected by the members and finally there would be Colin Howard, one of my regular partners who has a great short game and he never stops reminding me how Good Man City FC are and how lucky Fergie and MUFC are!”

Frank Latham THE Manchester Teachers’ Golf Society will enter its 72nd year in 2009 and several of its members will be placing orders for hard hats to play in the society meetings with the new Captain.

Didsbury 28-handicapper Frank ‘The Shank’ Latham was installed into office by retiring Captain Jack Moss of Astbury and as well as his badge of office he was also given a crash helmet to help him cope with his frequent accidents on the course.

Frank, who has been a society stalwart for most of the last 20 years, has needed a danger warning when he has played his three games a week during 2008 at Didsbury.

As well as being hit on the head on the course by a stray ball he has also suffered injuries to other sensitive parts of his body while in play.

He rounded off the year by getting his revenge when his unique ‘Shanking’ tee shot hit his playing partner Bob Collins firmly on the head even though Bob was actually stood behind the line of the ball on the tee.

Franks is a keen sailor and walker but his navigational skills on the course involve a lot of tacking as he has preserved his 28 handicap throughout his career.

MTGS President Roger Jackson said: “I will have to play with Frank several times during his year of office and I will have to think very carefully about where I have to stand when he is teeing off as nowhere seems to be safe when Frank’s about.”
